Warm Weather Tips For Healthy Kids | The Prescription Shop

Who’s looking forward to school being out for summer? With Spring break behind us, the end of the school year is swiftly approaching. We all want our kids to have a fun-filled summer vacation, but the one thing that can put a damper on all that excitement is getting sick. And let’s face it–some kids seem to pick up every bug that goes around. So how can our kids keep up with all the summer fun, but stay healthy? The Prescription Shop has got some tips for the whole family to try so you can enjoy a better summer break.

Make Sure Everybody Washes Their Hands.
This one’s especially easy to overlook when everyone is spending so much time outdoors. Make sure your kids wash their hands after they come indoors from playing outside, before they eat any food, after they use the bathroom, after they touch any animals and when you get home from running errands. Germs are everywhere, and frequent hand washing remains your first line of defense against illness.

Apply Sunscreen According To The Instructions.
Sunburn is miserable for everyone–but it’s especially bad for kids. Nowadays, we know that getting sunburned in your youth also leads to a higher risk of skin cancer down the road. The biggest mistake that people make with sunscreen is not applying it early or often enough. Make sure you check the label and help your kids reapply as needed. Also remember to apply the sunscreen liberally about 20 minutes before sun exposure. Get more tips on using sunscreen for your kids.

Remember to Use Bug Repellant.
Of course, sunburn’s not the only summertime worry. We also have to protect our kids from bug bites! Look for a travel size bug repellant that you can keep right next to the sunscreen in your bag.

Keep the Kids Well-Hydrated.
Teach your kids to choose water first over sweetened beverages or juice. You can cut up fruits, herbs, and veggies to infuse flavor into your water for a more interesting beverage. When the kiddos are playing outside, you can set up a water station with a cooler and to encourage them to drink and avoid heat exhaustion.
