Top Tips to Sleep Better | The Prescription Shop
How’s your sleep these days? Your entire body functions best when you get enough sleep. Everyone knows what it’s like to feel tired and rundown because they didn’t catch enough Zzzs. But a lack of sleep makes everything else harder too. It’s tough to concentrate or perform well at school, do a good job at work, or play sports. Skimping out on sleep can even worsen your mood and impair your ability to drive. The Prescription Shop wants to help you enjoy better sleep all year round.
Consider these tips:
- Wake up around the same time each day (within an hour of your usual wake up time) even on the weekends and holidays. This will help avoid sleep problems down the road.
- Don’t consume any caffeine after 3 p.m. That means you should avoid drinking any beverages with caffeine like soda, coffee, tea, or energy drinks after that cutoff.
- Avoid going to bed too hungry or too full. Have your evening meal at least three hours before going to sleep. If you need to, it’s fine to have a small bedtime snack like a glass of milk and a few crackers.
- Have a nightly bedtime routine. Start relaxing about one hour before you go to bed. Quiet activities like listening to calming music, reading a book or meditating may help. Be sure to turn off the TV and all electronics at least an hour before sleep, and keep them out of the bedroom too.
- Turn off your cell phone and all notifications or keep your phone outside your room while you sleep.
- Make your bedroom as quiet, dark and cool as possible. If you can’t control the noises around you, use earplugs or a fan to block out other sounds.
- Practice bedtime relaxation techniques. Read a book, meditate, or write a list of what you need to do the next day so you don’t have stress about remembering it in bed.
