Tips To Prevent Viral Gastroenteritis | The Prescription Shop

It’s not just the cold and flu season going on right now. We’re also in the midst of the stomach flu season. Also called a stomach bug or viral gastroenteritis, the stomach flu is an infection of the intestines; and is not to be confused with influenza, which is a respiratory infection. The stomach flu is most miserable, causing diarrhea, nausea, stomach cramps and vomiting. Because children commonly pick up the bug with their young immune systems, parents should be especially prepared to halt the spread of infection. The Prescription Shop has gathered five tips to help you prevent the stomach flu:

Scrimp on sharing.
Usually we encourage our kids to share, but once the stomach bug rears its ugly head, it’s time to stop sharing. Use separate cups, dishes and utensils for your sick child, along with different bathroom towels and clothing.

Disinfect surfaces… constantly.
To help kill stomach flu germs, you’ll need to clean every surface your sick child touches. Consider counters, doorknobs, faucets, phones and computer keyboards or other electronics. The CDC recommends using regular household bleach or chlorine bleach-based cleansers to complete this task.

Wash your hands frequently.
Whenever you can, remember to wash your hands often with soap and warm water. Also keep an alcohol-based hand sanitizer on hand for additional protection against those nasty stomach flu germs.

Get vaccinated.
Though there are several different viruses which can trigger viral gastroenteritis, and in fact, bacteria may sometimes cause a bout with the stomach flu, the most common cause is the rotavirus. There is a rotavirus vaccine. It might not prevent you from catching the illness altogether, but it should help keep the symptoms from getting too bad.

Bolster your immune system.
Of course, a healthy immune system is the best defense against infection. Experts recommend consuming a varied diet that supplies plenty of immune boosting nutrients such as vitamin C, vitamin E, zinc and selenium. Also consume lots of omega-3 essential fatty acids to help your body react better to an infection.
