Summer Skin Care Prevention | The Prescription Shop
Summer is the season to get outside and enjoy that sun. But let’s make sure you protect your skin from damaging UV rays because skin cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in the US. The Prescription Shop has put together tips to help you and your whole family stay safe and have fun!
Dress Up for the Sun.
For the best protection, dress sun savvy. You can wear sun-protective clothing with a wide-brimmed hat to protect more skin.
Protect your eyes by wearing wraparound sunglasses that block at least 99% of UVA and UVB light.
Liberally use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or more. Re-apply your sunscreen every 2 hours, and after swimming or sweating.
Don’t Hesitate to Seek Out Shade.
Experts recommend limiting direct exposure to the sun, particularly between the hours of 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., because that’s when UV rays are usually at their full strength. Spending time outdoors is great, but it’s important to take breaks from the heat of the sun too.
Say No To Tanning Beds and Sunlamps.
Both of these use harmful UV rays, cause long-term skin damage and contribute to the development of skin cancer. It’s better to just say no!
Learn How to Decipher Sunscreen Labels.
Are you wearing sunscreen daily? You should! While shopping for a sunscreen, here are the terms to know:
- Always choose a “broad-spectrum” sunscreen. That means you get protection against UVA and UVB rays. UVB rays are the main cause of sunburn, but UVA rays contribute to skin cancer and premature aging.
- Opt for a sunscreen with a SPF of 30 or more. Higher SPF numbers offer more protection. SPF 15 filters out 93% of UVB rays, SPF 30 filters out 97%; SPF 50 filters out 98%, and SPF 100 filters about 99%.
- “Water resistant” is not “waterproof.” Sunscreens that claim to be water resistant must state whether they last 40 minutes or 80 minutes of swimming or sweating.
- If you are seeking or sweating a lot, you’ll need to re-apply sunscreen more often.
- Also keep in mind that sunscreen can rub off when you dry yourself with a towel which means you’ll again need to re-apply.
