Quick Tips for Diabetic Feet
At the Prescription Shop, we care about your feet! There are a variety of chronic foot and leg wounds that are often caused by common, underlying conditions like diabetes and vascular disease. Experts estimate that at least a quarter of the more than 29 million people living with diabetes will develop a diabetic foot ulcer. Unfortunately, a lack of proper treatment and care of these wounds can lead to amputation or even death.
The following foot care tips can help you better protect your feet:
Check your feet for sores or other injuries every single day. You may have an injury, without being able to feel the pain.
Wash your feet every day and dry them carefully, paying special attention to dry between the toes to avoid fungal infections.
Trim your toenails straight across and not too low after you’ve washed and dried your feet.
Always wear properly fitted shoes that do not rub or irritate your feet. The Prescription Shop carries a variety of quality shoes specifically for diabetic feet by Dr Comfort.
Wear socks or stockings with your shoes, and avoid walking barefoot or while wearing just socks.
Maintain some type of regular, physical activity, which can help increase circulation in your feet. Consult your healthcare provider to learn more about activities right for you.
