Keeping Your Kids Safe and Happy When You Shop
Shopping with young children can be very challenging for caregivers, but there are definitely things you can do to help make the trip more fun, educational, and, most importantly, safe. Follow the tips below the next time you go shopping with little ones, and don’t forget to stop by The Prescription Shop too—we’d love to say hello!
Prior to Leaving:
- Check how everyone is feeling. It’s better for everyone to go out when they are well-rested and fed.
- Prepare your child before you go. Talk to them about the rules and expectations for the trip, and also let them know how it can be fun.
- Be clear on your expectations to stay near you, use an indoor voice, and follow the rules.
- Make sure everyone is dressed for the weather and has comfortable shoes.
At the Store:
- Always keep your children within sight in the store. Depending upon their age and agility, you can hold their hand, put them in the cart, or let them hold onto the cart with you.
- Make your child an active participant by giving them choices while encouraging healthy habits. You can ask if they want apples or oranges, broccoli or cauliflower, etc.
- You can further engage your child by giving them responsibility. Ask them to help you pick out bananas, or let your child steer the cart.
- Praise your child’s good behavior and tell them you appreciate their helpfulness. The more you make shopping an opportunity to play and interact with your child, the less stressful it will be.
- Never leave your child unattended or allow them to stand inside the cart.
