Keep Safe and Warm This Winter Season
Who’s ready for winter? With the bustling holiday season ahead and winter weather, it’s important to keep safety in mind for the whole family. Since most families do a lot of extra driving now, and through the new year, here are some tips to stay safe on the road.
Prep your car.
- Get your car inspected and serviced as needed, checking the radiator, antifreeze level and tire tread.
- Always keep the gas tank full in winter to help prevent ice from building up in the tank and fuel lines.
- Switch to a wintertime windshield washer formula.
Keep a winter emergency kit in your car in case you become stranded in the cold weather. Your kit should include:
- Blankets
- Food and water
- Booster cables
- Road flares
- Tire pump
- Bag of sand or cat litter for traction
- Compass
- Maps
- Flashlight
- Battery-powered radio
- Extra batteries
- First-aid kit
If you do happen to become stranded inside your car, follow these tips:
- Stay with your car–unless safety is less than 100 yards away.
- Keep your arms and legs moving to increase your body heat.
- Help others see you! Attach a bright cloth to the antenna, turn on the inside overhead light when engine is running, and raise the hood if snow is not falling.
- Conserve your car battery and only run the engine and heater for 10 minutes each hour.
- Open a downwind window and be sure that the tailpipe is not blocked.
