January is the natural time of year to reset our unhealthy habits and choose better ones. If you are diabetic, it’s good to take stock of your past year and where you want to go in the next one.
Read on for some helpful tips to better manage your diabetes and make 2017 your best year yet!
Set the right goal.
The very best resolutions begin with a realistic goal that matters deeply to you. In most cases, the most successful goals utilize a step-by-step approach. We’ve all heard the expression, “Don’t bite off more than you can chew.” That means making several mini goals that will lead up to your one large goal. The smaller goals will help keep you motivated and focused along the way.
What are some good goals for diabetics?
- Lose excess weight. Start with 10 pounds if you have a lot to go.
- Get your blood sugar and AIC under control. Your healthcare provider can help you figure out what’s realistic for you.
- Begin an exercise regimen. Remember, if you’ve been inactive, start slow and work your way up to your larger goal.
Make a Plan.
You’ve set your goals, so now it’s time to make a plan that will help you reach them. Figure out what supplies you may need to start working toward your new goal. Try to anticipate what could get in the way of your plan. Determine what you can you do if you hit an obstacle or barrier. Finally, choose a start date–it’s okay to start your resolutions right now even thought the first has passed. You still have most of the year to attain your goals!
Enact your plan.
There’s nothing else to do except to take action. Day by day, resolve to make the choices that will lead you to success with your first mini goal. When those new habit becomes second nature, you can add a new goal to keep working toward your larger one.
