Diabetic? Protect Your Health This Winter

Winter can be a difficult season for many due to the influx of illness, but it may be especially problematic for diabetics. For National Diabetes Month, let’s discuss how you can manage diabetes better during winter.

  • Get vaccinated.
  • Get plenty of sleep.
  • Wash your hands often.
  • If ill, be sure to drink lots of fluids, and test your blood sugar frequently.
  • Dress in appropriate layers, and cover your head and hands.
  • Wear comfortable shoes and socks, made for wet or cold weather.
  • Keep your blood glucose monitor close to your body to prevent malfunction in cold temperatures.
  • Even though it’s the holiday season, be aware and mindful of your diet—focus on whole foods, and limit alcohol and sweets.
  • Increase your daily activity by walking at a local mall or shopping center, or consider joining a gym or fitness class.
  • When traveling this season, always carry a winter emergency kit with: cell phone and charger, shovel, windshield scraper, flashlight, water and snacks, extra clothing and blankets.
  • Have glucose tablets or other hypoglycemia treatments readily available in your car or bag.
  • Be sure to seek help from close friends and a health care professional if you’re going through the winter blues.
  • Always check your blood sugar regularly, and reach out to your diabetes care team if you’re having trouble managing blood sugar this winter.
