April: IBS Awareness Month | The Prescription Shop
IBS Awareness Month occurs annually in April and is promoted by the International Foundation for Functional Gastrointestinal Disorder (IFFGD). The Prescription Shop also would like to help educate or community about the signs and symptoms of IBS so that those in need of medical care are more likely to seek it. It’s vital to spread the word and talk openly about this condition to reduce the lingering stigma.
IBS is an abbreviation for irritable bowel syndrome, a disorder which causes an individual chronic, recurrent bowel problems and abdominal pain. The bowel problems can vary and may include constipation, diarrhea, pain or any combination of these.
Individuals with IBS typically experience intestinal discomfort every day, but both the frequency and severity of IBS symptoms are unpredictable and will vary from person to person. When IBS is not managed, or it is poorly managed, the disorder becomes disruptive to virtually all aspects of that person’s life.
IBS is a physical condition which commonly impacts an individual emotionally as well. The inconvenience and discomfort of IBS frequently limits its sufferers’ their education and career goals. The stress of IBS can even negatively impact relationships.
Experts don’t yet understand what causes IBS. Most researchers think the symptoms are brought about by a disruption to the communication between the brain, nervous system and gut. People may mistakenly think that stress causes IBS, but in reality, it is merely a trigger that can exacerbate symptoms of the existing condition.
The IFFGD estimates that as much as 23% of the global population is affected by IBS and more than 30 million people in the US have it. Women are more likely to be diagnosed and account for 2 out of every 3 cases.
While there is currently no cure for IBS, it is vital to seek medical care. Once IBS is diagnosed and properly managed, many people with the condition experience little to no disruption of their life.
Unfortunately, many people suffer with IBS without seeking medical care. Any condition involving the bowels or bathroom problems can seem embarrassing to talk about with other people. However, good health and healing is worth the uncomfortable conversations and suffering in silence is far worse than speaking up to get the help you need.
