American Diabetes Month | The Prescription Shop
Did you know that November is American Diabetes Month? The Prescription Shop is here to help you learn more about this common condition. Today, one in 10 Americans have diabetes — more than 30 million people! Another 84 million adults in the US are also at high risk of developing type 2 diabetes.
You can learn about the symptoms here.
Fortunately, those who are at high risk for type 2 diabetes can lower their risk by more than half just by making healthy lifestyle changes. That means eating right, getting in more exercise, and losing excess weight.
Why do we recognize American Diabetes Month? We use the time to raise awareness about diabetes risk factors and also to help encourage people to make healthy lifestyle changes.
Here are just a few ideas to get started:
Encourage each other to make small changes, like taking the stairs instead of the elevator whenever you can.
Talk to other people in your community about getting routine physical checkups. It’s important for all of us to get our blood pressure and cholesterol checked, and talk with our doctors about our diabetes risk.
We can also ask doctors, nurses, and pharmacists to be healthy leaders in their communities by talking about the importance of eating a healthy diet and remaining physically active.
Would you like to help spread the word about diabetes and overall health? Consider these ideas in our special toolkit of ideas.
